SLAM Talk Title: Artificial Neural Networks: Letting the Computers do all the Work

How did you originally get interested in science? 

I have been interested in science for as long as I can remember. I first wanted to be an astronaut, then learned about nanotechnology from a spy novel I read when I was 10 and thought ‘that sounds cool’! 18 years later, I’m a nanoscientist.

What is your favorite place at the Lab? 

My lab. It’s air-conditioned.

Most memorable moment at the Lab? 

The moment I discovered that my microscope was controlled by a PlayStation controller, meaning that all the years I’d spent playing computer games could be retroactively classified as ‘academic research’.

What are your hobbies or interests outside the Lab? 

Hiking, Computer Games, Reading, Playing music (double bass and cornet), Fencing, running the Berkeley Lab Postdoc Association.
